Track & Field Withdrawals

Monday, August 25th, 2008

After that huge fix in Beijing, we track & field junkies will soon be suffering from a horrible case of Track & Field Withdrawals. Fortunately we can delay the horrible withdrawal symptoms for at least another couple of weeks because we can still look forward to watching [...live... in English instead of Norwegian...] another couple of track & field events. The next Golden League meet is Weltklasse Zürich and you can watch it live this Friday, August 29th, 2008 on TrackShark.com.

Live Blogging From London: 2008 Aviva London Grand Prix, Day 1

Friday, July 25th, 2008

1:00: Good afternoon, and thanks for visiting. This should be one exciting meet!

1:02: Ah, The unmistakable voice of Carol Lewis (and why does she have to laugh at her own jokes?).

1:06: Opening height in women’s pole vault: 4.00m.

1:08: The 4-event challenge (what’s the correct term, quadrathlon?) has started with the long jump. The first day’s events of the heptathlon will be held in two days.

1:10:  Next up: women’s 200m and Allyson Felix!

1:12: Allyson Felix finishes 4th! She looked like she was jogging. What happened?  Sharone Simpson wins.

Live Blogging From Stockholm: DN Galan Super Grand Prix

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

The live streaming feed from Stockholm is up and running on WCSN. I’ll be live blogging and posting updates for you as the meet progresses. The start lists and results can be found here.

[all times EDT]

1:04: Retired Swedish high jumper Kajsa Bergqvist just brought out the briefcase full of 1 ct. diamonds. Any athlete who sets a stadium record gets one.

1:09: Muna Lee gets a great start for USA Red and makes up the stagger on Poland before the 1st exchange of the 4×100m relay; Lauryn Williams and Torri Edwards blow the baton exchange in the final exchange, giving Debbie Ferguson of the Combination team her opening. She pulls away to win in 42.29.

1:15: Carol Lewis is the analyst. Oh, well. She’s actually really good when she talks about something she knows, like the long jump.

1:20: Naide Gomes of Portugal leads the women’s long jump with a mark of 7.04m.

1:23: Without LaShawn Merritt here to breath down his neck, Jeremy Wariner wins the 400m by a comfortable margin with a time of 44.29. Chris Brown of the Bahamas finishes 2nd with a time of 44.53.

1:41: In the men’s 3000m run, the 1000m mark was passed in 2:30.11 by the rabbit. He’s got a huge lead on the chase pack. Mottram and company must be practicing tactics.

1:46: Craig Mottram begins his drive at the bell lap and nobody has an answer for him. He wins the men’s 3000m by 5 meters with a time of 7:37.7. Is this how he plans on running the Olympic 5000m?

2:03: Abubaker Kaki Khamis wins the men’s 1000m and wins a diamond in the process. His time of 2:13.93 sets a new stadium record. Four men, Yuriy Borzakovskiy, set new PR’s in this rarely contested event.

2:12: Sanya Richards wins the 400m dash with a modest time of 50.38. No matter, she still gaps the field by at least 3 meters, and this field includes Novlene Williams, who finishes 2nd in 50.85, and Allyson Felix, who finishes 3rd in 50.88.

2:18: In his 2nd toss, Andreas Thorkildsen puts up a mark of 87.36m. He’s probably just put this javelin competition away.

2:33: Dayron Robles wins the 110m hurdles with fast time of 12.91 seconds. I wonder: does that $10,000 diamond that he wins for breaking the stadium record have to be shared with his comrades in Communist Cuba? Americans Oliver, Merritt, Trammell and Hicks finish 2, 3, 4 and 5.

2:48: Lauryn Williams beats a talent-packed women’s 100m field with a time of 11.10 seconds.

3:00: Current conditions in Stockholm:

70°F

Current:Clear

Wind: W at 9 mph

Humidity: 46%

3:01: Stefan Holm clears 2.30m.

3:05: After leading for much of the race, Mustafa Mohamed gets outkicked in the last 20 meters by Mike Kipyego in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Kipyego wins in 8:14.35. Wesley Kiprotich also sneaks by Mohamed to take 2nd in 8:14.52. Mohamed finishes in 8:14.77.

3:13: Yelena Isinbayeva easily clears 4.85m in the women’s pole vault.

3:16: Stefan Holm missed his 3rd attempt at 2.33m. He wins the competition with a mark of 2.30m.

3:23: Asafa Powell gets a great start and wins wire to wire, beating Usain Bolt with a time of 9.89.

3:25: Official times: Asafa Powell, 9.88. Usain Bolt, 9.89. Add Tyson Gay to the mix in Beijing and we should see a heck of a final!

3:28: Reigning Olympic high jump champion Yelena Slesarenko clears a height of 2.00m.

3:29: Up next, the women’s 5000m. Reigning Olympic and World champion Meseret Defar is in the race.

3:30: A 2:50.2 pace every 1000m will get them on world-record pace. Defar is tucked right in behind the rabbit and they go through 1000m in the mid 2:50’s.

3:37: Blanca Vlasic clears 2.02m in the high jump then puts her finger to her ear, asking the crowd to get into the competition.

3:41: Defar passes the 4000m in 11:29, 9 seconds behind world-record pace.

3:45: Defar finished just off Tirunesh Dibaba’s world record of 14:11.15 with a time of 14:12.32. She ran a 60-second last lap!

3:47: Vlasic misses all three attempts at 2.05m. She wins with her 2.02m mark.

3:49: In the women’s 100m hurdles, Lolo Jones has to close quickly to edge out Delloreen Ennis-London of Jamaica. Jones wins with a time of 12.64 seconds. Her winning time in the "A" race is slower than Canadian Priscilla Lopes’ time of 12.61 in the "B" race.

3:55: Last race coming up: the men’s 4×100m relay. Two USA teams, Brazil and Poland.

3:58: USA goes 1,2 in the relay. The winning time is 37.99, a meet record.

Thanks for visiting! That’s it for live blogging today. Complete results can be found here. Next up for live-blogging: the Aviva London Grand Prix on 7/25/08 and 7/26/08. See you then!
