Gold medal Going To Jefferson Perez?
Friday, September 26th, 2008
Reader Richard Boroto wrote the following comment to 400meteroval.com tonight:
At a ceremony this week honoring silver medal-winner, Jefferson Pérez, Ecuadorian Olympic Committee President Danilo Carrera announced that we may see an announcement about doping by the two Russian race walkers in Beijing in the next few days, which would mean the gold medal for Pérez . Carrera didn’t reveal the source of that information.
Pérez finished 2nd at the 2008 Olympics to Valeriy Borchin of Russia. Pérez’ time of 1:19:15, a season’s best, was 14 seconds behind Borchin’s winning time of 1:19:01.

Thoughts About the Men’s 800m Heats
Wednesday, August 20th, 2008Wilfred Bungei (KEN, 1:44.90) and Yuriy Borzakovskiy (RUS, 1:45.15) were the auto-qualifiers in heat 1. Absolutely no surprise there.
Abubaker Kaki (SUD, 1:46.98, in photo above, center) ran the first 200m of heat 2 in 25 seconds… and looked like he was jogging! He refused to let anyone pass him. Several men challenged him throughout the race so he visibly switched gears every time to hold them off. What a great job of psyching them out. They all quickly backed down. He went on to win his heat easily. Mohammed Al-Salhi (KSA, 1:47.02) had the best kick and outran Dmitriy Bogdanov (RUS, 1:47.49) for the 2nd qualifying position.
Pawel Czapiewski (POL, 1:47.66) made the first major tactical error of the heats and it may have cost him the semi-finals. He sprinted to the front some 550m into heat 3, nicely shifting gears and looking strong. Then he relaxed too much and let both Michael Rimmer, (GBR, 1:47.61) and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (RSA, 1:47.64) outkick him in a slow heat.

Monday, August 4th, 2008Usain Bolt Will Double In Beijing
Saturday, August 2nd, 2008
It’s official. Usain Bolt, the world-record holder in the 100m dash (9.72 seconds), the heavy favorite to win gold in the 200m dash at the 2008 Olympic Games and who until now had only confirmed that he would run the longer race in Beijing, will double. According to Reuters, who broke the story:
Neither the coach, Glen Mills, or Bolt had previously confirmed the Jamaican would run both events.
"He will run both," Mills said in an e-mail to Reuters.
The announcement sets up one of the most highly anticipated match-ups in Olympic history between Bolt, former world-record holder Asafa Powell and current world champion Tyson Gay. Powell’s PR is 9.74 seconds, a time he ran in 2007. His best time so far in 2008 is 9.88 seconds. He has run under 9.8 seconds a total of 5 times. Gay ran his PR of 9.77 seconds in 2008 and has run the fastest ever 100m dash in any conditions, a wind-assisted 9.68 seconds that was run with a wind reading of +4.1m/second.
